Funding Within PIPER - Project 3
Project 3 — Interprofessional Pediatric Community Health Experience – Clinical Learning Centre
Principle Investigator
Dr Teresa Carter, Developmental Paediatrician
Co-investigators
Eileen Hanna, Eric Staples, Ruth Schofield, Patty Solomon
Goals & Objectives:
The project objectives are to:
- Develop and evaluate an IP experience at a clinical site, using a problem based small group context
- Develop a video and evaluate the same clinical experience, using a problem based small group context
- Identify the advantages and disadvantages of using an on site clinical experience, compared to a video of the same clinical experience
- Develop IP learning resources (tutorial problems, courseware) in family focused care
Updates:
We have developed a two-part experience, to enable comparison of two models. In Part 1, the IP student team meets with a facilitator for a two hour pbl session to discuss the concepts of working in interprofessional teams, and to prepare for the clinical experience by discussing a paper case based on an actual clinical problem that we have redesigned. Part 2 is a hands on clinical experience, either at KidsAbility, a Children’s Treatment Centre in Guelph, or a video of the actual event. After viewing an assessment of a child and caregiver, the clinical facilitator leads a discussion of the IP team’s plan for care. Next, students have the opportunity to observe the IP team assess a second child and caregiver. Finally, the IP student team develops a plan, and discusses it with the facilitator before they receive the actual plan presented to the caregiver.
