Event Feedback

PIPER sponsors a variety of ongoing events. Here is a sample of what participants have had to say about them.

What aspects of the experience contributed most to your learning?

Quote1 The morning panel discussion on Exploring Diabetes given by various health care providers clearly provided me with the reason we need interprofessionalism in all out health care pursuits

Quote2 I really enjoyed visiting the BBirthing House to understand how the native midwives work in conjunction with their clients and families, as well as the Western Medicine system of obstetricians. I had never heard of the Intergenerational Effect until my visit to Six Nations.

A Day in Aboriginal Health

The learning objective was to increase awareness among McMaster health sciences students of interdisciplinary health care from an Aboriginal perspective, with an ultimate goal of improving cultural competence in working with the Aboriginal population.

The Interprofessional Day in Aboriginal Health was delivered entirely at Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Elders, traditional healers and professionals from the community provided the core of all teaching with faculty from the university providing support for the PBL component.

What moment was the most engaging or helpful to your learning during the session?

Quote3I really enjoyed everything ... the SP portrayal of conflict in this family relationship, the fact that we has to take responsibility for the situation, come to a team resolution before the facilitators intervened, and the group discussion on how to deal with the consequences of a plan made by a team ... it made me realize what a great choice I made by coming in to the health care field.

Quote4I think the final feedback period was most helpful because then we could really analyze our behaviours in both team work, collaboration and interviewing as an individual member of a health care team.

Communication Skills Labs

Skills to communicate effectively in teams are essential for all health professionals. Increasingly, research is showing that there are better patient outcomes and improved work satisfaction in well functioning health care teams.

In this event, students have the opportunity to develop collaborative team skills and communication techniques, while working through a patient scenario with standardized patients.

Faculty who have expertise in communication skills observe the IP student teams as they interact with each other and the standardized patients, and provide feedback to the team.

Settlement & Integration Services Organization (SISO)

This half day event helps students to learn about issues that face immigrants and refugees specific to the Hamilton area. A panel composed of staff from SISO present an overview of SISO’s history and mandate, and discuss SISO’s programs and services.

Interprofessional student groups discuss an actual refugee scenario with facilitation from SISO staff and McMaster faculty.
